Cloud Toda

Tonight, Cloud Toda, his wife and his baby daughter paid us a visit in Ginza. As I have written before, bac k in 2006 Cloudy and his mechanic at the time, Hide, stayed with my family at our home in California for a couple months while he trained and competed in the Washougal MX National. Last July, Cloud was involved in a horrific practice crash and sustained paralyzing injuries. This was the first time I had seen him, and I was stoked to see how well he was doing. Cloud is very positive about the future, and works through six hours of therapy a day in hopes of someday being able to walk again. Of course, the language barrier kept me from getting the 100% accurate story, but as I understand it, he is undergoing some pretty radical Japanese therapy and has high hopes.
It was great to see Cloud, and also to meet his new wife and daughter. We talked a lot about my good friend Ricky James, who continues to ride aboard a modified motocross bike and this year won three truck racing championships in his rookie season. I could see the wheels spinning in Cloud’s head as we talked about RJ’s bike set up…

Shit happens, it’s how a person deals with it. I and countless others spend huge amounts of our hard earned cash in hopes of never sustaining an injury as serious as Cloud Toda. Regardless of the injury the man showing he has the fortitude to stay positive and give it 110% is not only inspirational, but shows no matter what happens out there riding if you live through it there is still hope. I am in the process of recovery, 2 plates 8 screws in my right forearm, some days I lust for the exhiliration of opening the throttle to the stop. I have been injured before, and unfortunatly due to the high risk of the sport I will most likely be injured again, but Cloud Toda is proof no matter how bad the injury the insanity that is motocross can and will live on inside every REAL racer.

hey swap, i got a question. i was reading the 2008 issue with austin stroupe on the cover. in the snapshots there is a picture of Mike Gosselaar washing alessi’s bike. that shot is amazing and i was wondering if you found it if you could email it to me. id like to use it on a poster for my team, team fca motocross of tennessee, on our spring camp! thanks a bunch.
